Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Sometimes, however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrade that they're attached to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items that have upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will take on. A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will increase its damage absorption. But, it's important to note that this will also raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and each one has distinct effects. Certain upgrades give armor a greater number of health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use, which is identified by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades are updated daily or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest method to upgrade your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more costly, but is readily available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can give a significant improvements in stats and are definitely worth the investment.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to its maximum upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense values however, the user must be aware that putting on weight can drastically decrease its agility and speed. This is why it is typically not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces above +9, since the defensive boost gained is typically not worth the weight and power costs of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades let players increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. For instance an upgrade could improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a sniper rifle. Certain weapons come with special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, minimizes weapon overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's velocity to cause more damage) are two examples.

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade for applying. These can be obtained by doing side quests, or killing a certain number of monsters or bosses or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade a weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade, the more advanced the level. The cost of upgrading will be lower if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the method of upgrading your equipment and weapon sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon and equipment by paying a certain number of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear with low levels of upgrade but with high base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a greater chance of granting you the most prestigious tier of benefits and blessings.

To level up faster, many players prioritize upgrading their weapons. In addition players, they should think about upgrading the weapons favored by their squadmates to increase their power as well. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R, which will increase its utility when paired with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, increasing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is a method of making them, where you combine the gemstone with specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the quality of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents are available from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or by salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The Jeweler can improve the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boost when slotted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create all tiers of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones, which you must be at certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.

It is normal to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and make a harder surface than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also get glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be freely traded, but they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded by the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis are not swappable, and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character many small, but useful, benefits. They are available in the starter area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors and by the completion of road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also compensate for the absence of good slots in the team or talent tree that are normally filled by the hero's optimal stats.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace in the near future. Then, you should consider any items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel for the item upgrader mod to be upgraded. This is especially true if you're looking to upgrade several statistics on an item upgrades. It is best to upgrade just one crucial stat than two less important ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Top and mid players however will pick a green or a pink ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

Apart from the items mentioned above, players can also discover a variety of other trinkets in the game in the form of awards and trophies. They can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, for instance the main quest of a chapter or destroying a boss. These can be viewed by selecting the appropriate achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
